Naruto x Ninku — New Crossover Anime Revealed at NYCC

Naruto x Ninku is the answer — and I’d bet almost nobody had it on their bingo card. After three years of waiting on that mysterious shelved anime project, Viz finally pulled the curtain back at New York Comic Con, and the new Naruto anime turns out to be a four-episode crossover with Ninku: the 1993 shonen series that inspired Masashi Kishimoto to create Naruto in the first place. Team 7 falls into another world. The man who drew Naruto is paying his debt to the manga that made him. Here’s everything revealed.

🍥 Naruto x Ninku — What Was Announced

The reveal came Saturday, October 10, during the “NARUTO: What’s Next?” panel on the Empire Stage at New York Comic Con 2026 — staged deliberately on Naruto Uzumaki’s birthday. (EpicFlix)

Naruto x Ninku is in production and will consist of four episodes, with Masashi Kishimoto and Ninku creator Koji Kiriyama supervising every installment. (MEAWW)

The director choice is a lovely bit of casting: Noriyuki Abe directed both the Boruto anime and the original Ninku anime. (My Otaku World) He’s one of the only people alive who’s shaped both franchises.

⚡ Why Ninku? The Story Behind It

This is the part that elevates Naruto x Ninku from “fun crossover” to something genuinely meaningful.

Ninku is a shonen series first published in 1993, adapted into its own anime two years later — and it hasn’t had a new anime in 30 years. (Anime Superhero, EpicFlix)

Kishimoto was a fan. In a message shared at the panel, he said: “I created NARUTO because I personally wanted to see the continuation of NINKŪ.” He added, “Simply put, Fūsuke is Naruto’s secret mentor.” (MEAWW)

Think about what that means. One of the biggest manga in history exists because a young artist wanted more of a series that ended too soon. Thirty years later, Naruto is bringing Ninku back with it.

Pierrot’s framing captures it well. Executive producer Yoshihiro Tominaga explained: “With this project, we were aiming for a fusion of a new, fresh look and nostalgia. Both Naruto and Ninkū return with new animation after such a long time.” (The Pop Insider)

🌀 The Story — Team 7 in Another World

Here’s the official setup. Team 7 members Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura are given a mission by Kakashi. Since Kakashi cannot participate himself, Naruto is appointed acting leader. (MEAWW)

From there it goes sideways: in the completely original story, Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura accidentally tumble into the world of Ninku through an interdimensional tunnel. (My Otaku World, Anime Superhero)

Two details worth noting. First, this puts the young, original Team 7 front and center — not the adult versions, not Boruto’s generation. Second, Kakashi isn’t making the jump. (EpicFlix)

Naruto as acting captain, with Sasuke and Sakura, in a world where none of their assumptions apply. That’s a strong premise for four episodes.

🧩 So What Happened to the Shelved 2023 Project?

Good question — and it looks like we finally have the answer.

Naruto x Ninku appears to be the reshaped form of the four-episode revival series first announced in 2023 for Naruto’s 20th anniversary, which was postponed that August so the team could improve its quality. (EpicFlix)

Same episode count, same studio, same long silence — now repurposed into something nobody predicted. Most outlets, ours included, assumed the NYCC reveal would simply be the old 2023 project dusted off. (Anime Superhero) It was, and it wasn’t.

(We laid out that theory in our new Naruto anime preview — half right, which is the most anyone managed.)

🗺️ Project Rasengan — The Roadmap Through 2029

Naruto x Ninku isn’t a standalone. The panel unveiled Project Rasengan, a sprawling roadmap of new projects stretching through 2029, built around the franchise’s 25th anniversary. (My Otaku World, Anime Superhero)

What’s in it:

The Naruto: Shadow Rising reveal closed the panel, and the footage was loaded: Naruto holding the Hokage hat, glimpses of Kakashi, Sasuke, and Sakura looking at a baby — plus Naruto and Sasuke clashing. (MEAWW)

Kishimoto drawing a new Naruto manga himself is arguably the biggest news of the whole panel.

On the live-action side: Charles Melton (Riverdale, Beef) is “in final negotiations” to play Kakashi, while casting for Team 7 continues. (Anime News Network, Anime Superhero) Director Destin Daniel Cretton shared a message at the panel.

❓ When Can We Watch It?

The honest answer: streaming details and a release date for Naruto x Ninku have not been announced. (EpicFlix)

It’s confirmed in production with staff attached — but no window, no platform. Given Project Rasengan runs through 2029 and the 25th anniversary lands in 2027, somewhere in that stretch is the reasonable guess. Nothing official.

Watch for Jump Festa in December. That’s historically where Naruto drops its dates.

Believe it. 🍥
